So far we have six newspapers joining The Obsidian Collection with archives of over 4 million images and thousands of newspaper stories not immediately accessible to Millennials and the iGeneration. They access the majority of their information online and these items are not digitized.
We gave a group of youth of the iGeneration, from Elgin Community College, a tour of The Chicago Defender Newspaper offices and archives. We asked them to take the photos and create a digital archive record of their visit.
These young adults were not familiar with the historic importance of the Black newspaper. They receive most if not all of their news from digital sources. They were not familiar with some of the most accomplished African-Americans in Chicago including Mayor Harold Washington. But walking through the photo gallery, they connected.
As they were leaving, we gave them printed issues of The Chicago Defender. It was pretty clear that print news wasn't their first resource. They promised to be part of the first users of the app for The Obsidian Collection when we create it. It's coming... We've got a lot of history to share!
